Muse Headlines the V Festival

August 16th, 2008 - Hylands Park - Chelmsford, UK
A typical mid-summer’s August day in the UK saw both Weston Park and Hylands Park face the rain, the two sites being the dual locations of the V festival, one of the biggest UK festivals (alongside Glastonbury and Reading & Leeds). Yet the rain didn’t dampen anybody’s spirit as a blistering set featuring all the hits from The Stereophonics ensured everybody forgot about being knee high in mud pits and look forward to headliners Muse.

Andrew McMahon is musician, poet and cancer survivor but, on Saturday night he was simply a rock star. As McMahon led the piano driven Jack’s Mannequin in Asbury Park, NJ, the entire room was in a trance of melodic rock lullabies. Read more
A Recap on the All Points West Festival
August 9, 2008 by Derek Johnson · 2 Comments
Dragonflies, cigarette ashes and the aroma of weed filled the air at the All Points West Music Festival that took place on Saturday August 9th at Liberty State Park in Jersey City. It was a beautiful day with sweltering heat and not a cloud in the sky. One of the first acts to take the stage was Alberta Cross, whom I first discovered on MySpace and immediately took a liking to their hard/Southern blues rock sound. With their grungy long, dirty hair and plaid shirt/black vest/cowboy boots attire combination, they had a striking resemblance to the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Alberta Cross’s slow jam blues had a nice refreshing sound in comparison to some of the other bands that performed. It’s a shame there aren’t more bands like this nowadays that have high-pitched vocals, in-your-face distortion and great slide guitar. “The Thief and the Heartbreaker” was a straight-up jam with a warm and catchy chorus for the crowd to bob their heads along to. Concert Review: Counting Crows Open for Maroon 5 at the Comcast Center

August 2, 2008 – Comcast Center – Mansfield, MA
Ever since the Counting Crows hit single “Mr. Jones” hit airwaves circa 1993, I was hooked. Even though I was only in the 6th grade, I still knew that August and Everything After was one of the best albums I had ever experienced (and still one of my top 5 favorites to date). The show on Saturday evening at the Comcast Center in Mansfield, MA was actually my third time seeing them live, and Adam Duritz never ceases to put his unique spin on the music every time. Read more

July 4th, 2008 – Miller Oasis – Milwaukee, WI
Since their first album nearly ten years ago, The Roots have stood by two things. First, they are open to a continual artistic evolution and advancement. Secondly, their music represents an ideological dialogue on issues of politics, economic inequalities and civil rights. With this in mind, when The Roots took the stage tonight at the Miller Oasis, they proceeded to represent themselves perfectly. Read more

June 30, 2008 - Comcast Center - Mansfield, MA
I never realized how much of a politician Eddie Vedder was until arriving at Pearl Jam’s last show of their 2008 tour on Monday night. As soon as I entered the Comcast Center parking lot, two men dressed up in cow suits approached us with applications to register to vote, stating the band was encouraging everyone to sign up to vote for the 2008 election. Stevie Wonder’s Still Got It

June 22nd - Comcast Center - Mansfield, MA
Ok, I admit it: I absolutely love Stevie Wonder. Considering the fact that I’m only twenty-five, most people think his music is slightly “before my time,” but I happen to disagree. I not only love his mixture of beautiful ballads and catchy, radio-friendly tunes, but also the fact that, even after all these years, he still knows how to deliver. Read more

Metro Station at the Bamboozle Roadshow

May 4th - Worcester Palladium - Worcester, MA
On Sunday May 4th, the streets of Worcester were lined up with hundreds of teens, all waiting in line to be the first to arrive at the Bamboozle Roadshow at the Palladium. I arrived at exactly 5pm, which was when the doors were scheduled to open, and there was already an endless line that had formed on the sidewalk and seemed to go on for days. Apparently, every teen within driving distance of Western Massachusetts didn’t want to miss a minute of the action that was about to take place. Read more
